30 Red Christmas Nail Designs to Copy, Plus the Polishes to Use

Red Christmas nails are the most classic holiday manicure, but the right red depends on your undertone and the look you want. Bright reds feel playful, blue-based reds look elegant and wine reds feel rich and grown-up. Here are 30 red designs, each with the red polish to use and how to paint it.

Every group is illustrated so you can compare designs at a glance. Colors are approximations of the named shades; check the shade name before you buy.

Quick Answer

Start red Christmas nails by choosing your red: a bright classic red, a blue-based cherry or a deep wine shade. Then pick a style: solid and glossy for a timeless look, glitter or metallic for parties, red French tips for something minimal, red and white for candy cane vibes, or red, green and gold for a traditional festive set. The quick reference table below lists the polish to use for every look.

Choose your Christmas red first

  • Bright true red: OPI Big Apple Red, Essie Really Red. Suits most skin tones.
  • Cool, blue-based red: OPI Got the Blues for Red. Flatters cool and pink undertones.
  • Warm red-orange: OPI The Thrill of Brazil. Flatters warm and olive undertones.
  • Deep red: Essie Wicked.
  • Wine: OPI Malaga Wine, Essie Bordeaux.

Not sure of your undertone? Look at the veins on your inner wrist: bluish veins usually mean cool, greenish mean warm, and a mix means neutral. For a fuller comparison, see our best red nail polish and best burgundy nail polish guides.

Solid and glossy red Christmas nails

A flawless solid red is the base for every other design on this list.

1. High-shine true red

Blue-based reds look crisp on short squoval nails. Keep the cuticle line sharp with a cleanup brush.

3. Warm red-orange on almond nails

Polish to use: OPI The Thrill of Brazil

4. Deep red for evening parties

Polish to use: Essie Wicked

5. Wine crème

Polish to use: OPI Malaga Wine

A quieter festive red with a wine depth, suitable for work and dinners alike.

6. Matte red

Polish to use: Any red + matte top coat

A matte top coat turns any red velvety. Apply it in one quick layer; overworking causes streaks.

How to paint the designs in this post

Most of the looks above use a handful of techniques. Here is how to do each one with regular polish at home.

Glitter tips and glitter fades

Wipe most of the glitter polish off the brush, then dab (do not stroke) it onto the free edge. For a fade, dab heavily at the tip and with less polish each time you move toward the cuticle. A makeup sponge gives a softer gradient. Glitter is textured, so finish with two layers of glossy top coat, letting the first set before the second.

French and metallic tips

Paint your base and let it dry for at least five minutes. Load a thin striping brush with the tip color, rest your painting hand on the table, and rotate the finger rather than the brush as you sweep from one side of the free edge to the other. For a micro French, keep the line no wider than a grain of rice. Tip-guide stickers or a strip of tape give a cleaner line if freehand is difficult; peel them while the polish is still wet.

Half-moons

Place a hole-punch reinforcement sticker over the lunula (the pale half-moon near the cuticle) once the base is dry, paint the accent color above or below it, and peel the sticker off while the polish is wet. You can also paint the crescent freehand with a small brush.

Dots and stars

Pour a drop of polish onto foil and dip the dotting tool into it rather than into the bottle. Re-dip every two or three dots so they stay the same size. For stars, use star-shaped nail stickers or press a small star stud into wet top coat.

Thin stripes

Use striping tape or a long, thin striping brush. Place your elbow on the table to steady your hand, start the stripe at the cuticle and pull toward the tip in one stroke. One thin vertical stripe makes short nails look longer.

Candy cane stripes

Paint a white base and let it dry completely, ideally ten minutes. Lay strips of striping tape diagonally across the nail with even gaps, paint red over the gaps, and peel the tape toward the cuticle while the red is still wet. Freehand works too: draw each stripe in one confident stroke with a long striping brush, then clean any wobbles with a brush dipped in remover.

Snowflakes

Use a thin striping brush with white or silver polish. Draw a vertical line, then two diagonal lines crossing it in the center to make six arms. Add a tiny V at the end of each arm and a dot in the center with a dotting tool. Small snowflakes look neater than large ones, so keep each one to about half the nail width.

Small motifs (holly, trees, bows and hearts)

Keep motifs small and in the center third of the nail. Build them from simple shapes: a holly leaf is two teardrops, a tree is a triangle, a heart is two dots pulled into a point, and a bow is two small triangles meeting at a dot. Use a dotting tool for berries and centers and let each color dry before adding the next.

Plaid

Paint the base, then draw two or three thin vertical lines and two or three horizontal lines in the first accent color with a striping brush. Add a single thinner line in a second color through the middle of each band. Keep plaid to one or two accent nails and seal with matte top coat for a flannel look.

Ombré

Paint the lighter shade as a base. Paint stripes of both shades side by side on a makeup sponge, dab the sponge onto the nail, and repeat two or three times to build color. Clean the skin with remover and a small brush, then top coat to smooth the texture.

How to get a streak-free red manicure

Red pigment shows streaks and stains easily. Always use a base coat, apply two thin coats, and clean up the edges with a small brush dipped in remover before the top coat. To keep reds from chipping over the holidays, follow our guide to preventing nail polish chips.

FAQs

Which red is best for Christmas nails?

A bright true red is the most classic. Choose a blue-based red for cool undertones, a red-orange for warm undertones, or wine for a richer evening look.

How do I stop red polish staining my nails?

Use a base coat under every red manicure and remove red polish by holding a soaked cotton pad on the nail before wiping, so the pigment is not rubbed into the nail.
